“Do my plumbing fixtures need to be the same color as my lighting fixtures?”
“Should my cabinet hardware match my stainless refrigerator or my champagne colored island lights?”
“Is there a rule about mixing gold and silver metals?”
No, nope, and absolutely not.
To quote the wisdom of my precious mother, “If I only had a nickel for every time I’ve been asked these questions, I could afford to live in Paris.”
Let’s be honest, nothing truly artistic or original was ever created by following a list of rules. We aren’t living with a free spirit or being true to our own personal sense of style if we concern ourselves with someone else’s rules. So if you want a champagne colored chandelier in your kitchen, hang it. And if you want cabinet pulls of silver, glass, antique brass, or bronze, then by all means, install them on your cabinets! When we expand the boundaries of our imagination, so also do we enchant the magic wand of our imagination.
I really don’t live by design rules. I prefer to drift with the flow of inspiration, regardless of which boat it sails in on. Collaborating with clients adds a sense of purpose to my work, and I live for those moments when heads are put together and expressive new ideas emerge.
So mix the metals! The more mixology we allow, the more possibilities we create. Please don’t limit your mind to a house full of silver or a room full of gold. And most importantly, believe in your ability to envision something beautiful. Allow your imagination to run wild, to the places you’ve been or wish to go, to the people and things that warm your spirit and enlighten your soul. Once your imagination sails to your happy places, so will you!
